Administrators - What to do now |
|
|
|
As an administrator you play a key role in creating a positive, safe and healthy club environment. In order to fulfil this responsibility you need to ensure that policies and procedures are in place to address all forms of unacceptable behaviour, including the behaviour of parents.
Approach the parent at the first sign of abusive or inappropriate behaviour :
- remind the parent that the children are there to have fun.
- emphasise that the club is committed to creating a environment where people are treated with respect and dignity.
- let them know that children may be influenced by their behaviour.
- acknowledge that they may be frustrated by the decisions a coach or umpire have made but explain that the person is doing their best (everyone makes mistakes) and that the umpire may see things differently from their field of play.
- explain that abuse directed at players or sporting personnel on either team is unacceptable.
- refer to the club’s Code of Behaviour – the parent may not realise that they have behaved inappropriately.
- consider issuing a warning.
- Contact the parent the following week and discuss the club’s expectations, Code of Behaviour and disciplinary actions.
- Explain the impact of ugly behaviour on children, parents and other club members and stress the club’s duty of care.
- Describe the actions the club can take against those who breach the club’s guidelines. Depending on your sports policies and rules this might include:
- their child being withdrawn from the game (if your club’s membership rules and other policies support this action)
- play being suspended
- them being asked to leave.
- Consider issuing a warning
- Monitor the parent's behaviour
