Administrators - What to do now |
|
|
|
As an administrator you have a responsibility to recognise the potential impact a relationship between a coach and a player may have on the team, the club and the image of sport generally. It is also up to you to address the issue with the individuals concerned.
- Check if your sport has a policy or regulation regarding intimate relationships between coaches and athletes or Code of Behaviour. Follow the process outlined in the policy or regulation.
- Talk to the athlete and coach about the relationship – but make sure you have at least one other committee member present. Ask them if they are engaged in an intimate relationship and explain the reasons for your concerns and the impact of their relationship on the sport.
- Take into account the factors listed under Information to help you understand the issue. Possible actions include:
- speaking to team mates
- monitoring the impact of the relationship on the athlete and team mates;
- transferring the coach
- requesting the coach resign
- dismissing the coach.
- Seek advice from your state/national sports organisation (if necessary).
- Contact the police immediately if you reasonably suspect that an adult and athlete under the age of consent are engaged in a sexual relationship as this is against the criminal law.
