Players - What to do now

As a participant you’re responsible for behaving in an appropriate, respectful, non discriminatory manner consistent with your associations/club’s Code of Behaviour. Any activity or behaviour that makes you or other players feel uncomfortable should be identified and addressed.

If you believe you are being sexually harassed

  • Ask for the behaviour to stop.  (Not everyone feels comfortable taking this step.  If you do, that's great.  If not, work through the steps below.)
  • Approach your coach, administrator, or Member Protection Information Officer for advice.
  • Access a copy of the relevant club policy (e.g., Member Protection policy) so that you understand your sports complaint processes.
  • Determine the course of action you want to take. This could include asking your club administrator to meet with the peson you are complaining about, making a complaint to your club's committee or referring your complaint to an anti-discrimination agency
  • Keep notes (e.g., when and where it happened and if there were any witnesses).

If are alleged to be sexually harassing another person

Reflect on your behaviour.  Can you identify anything you have said or done that would cause someone to assume you were sexually harassing them? Might you have inadvertently created the wrong impression?  If so, take the first opportunity to apologise.

If you can't identify any inappropriate behaviour:

  • expect to be treated fairly and given support
  • tell your side of the story
  • cooperate with any inquiry
  • do not harass or threaten the person who has made the complaint
  • recognise that you may be moved to other duties where you will not be in contact with the complainant.
