Administrators - What to do next
- Provide leadership and and promote inclusive practices.
- Access some of the many resources that explore cultural and religious considerations. The Centre for Multicultural Youth provides a comprehensive range of information and services including a culturally inclusive toolkit for sports organisations, tips, templates and guidelines for policy development (e.g., uniforms) and news relating to state and national activities.
- Raise the need to be inclusive of people from multi-cultural backgrounds with the management committee. Consider strategies such as:
- contacting schools, community centres and local councils to promote membership of your club to people from multi-cultural backgrounds
- appoint a mentor or liaison person to support new members, particularly those from multi-cultural backgrounds. (This is the type of person who should liase with the family if problems should arise in relation to female participation)
- publicise and celebrate the club’s diversity.
- Develop or adopt a Member Protection Policy that makes clear that discrimination and harassment will not be tolerated.
- Make sure your coaches and officials understand the Member Protection Policy.
- Promote fair, tolerant and inclusive practices throughout the club e.g., in newsletters, on your website, via the club’s Code of Behaviour.
- Publicise your complaint handling process/grievance procedure to all club members.
