Players - What to do now

As a player, the things you do and say contribute to the team/club’s culture.  It’s therefore important that you uphold your sport’s Member Protection Policy and Code of Behaviour and that you treat all club members – irrespective of their racial and cultural backgrounds – with dignity and respect.

If a team member is giving you a hard time because of your race or cultural practices

  • Understand that harassment has no place in sport.
  • Talk to the coach and ask them to take speak to the person who is harassing you.
  • Speak with your club President or a Member Protection Information Officer within your sport (club, state or national level) if the behaviour continues. They will take your complaint seriously and explain your sports policies and procedures for dealing with harassment and discrimination.
  • Consider contacting your anti-discrimination agency. Depending on the nature of the harassment, you may have a complaint of unlawful discrimination that could be dealt with externally by an anti-discrimination agency.
