Players - What to do now
As a player the things you say and do contribute to the club’s culture. It’s therefore important that you uphold your sport’s Member Protection Policy and Code of Behaviour and that you treat all club members – irrespective of their religious background – with dignity and respect.
If one of the team members is giving you a hard time because of your religion/wearing of the hijab:
- Make sure that your hijab is safely secured (e.g., with Velcro) and in the teams colours.
- Tell them to stop and that the behaviour is in breach of your sport’s Member Protection or other welfare policy.
- Discuss the matter with your coach – he or she should raise the matter with the team and reinforce the club’s stance against discriminatory and harassing behaviour.
- Speak with a Member Protection Information Officer within the sport (club, state or national level) if the behaviour continues.
- Consider contacting your anti-discrimination agency as you may have a complaint of unlawful discrimination.
