Parents - What to do now
People can have very strong views about girls playing in boys’ teams and vice versa. As a parent it’s important that you support your child and their desire to play, however in doing so consider the circumstances surrounding the issue and the opinions of others (e.g., the coach and administrator).
- Support your child but be objective about their skills and abilities.
- Make sure this is something they really want to do, not something you want them to do.
- Check your sport’s policy/position on this issue. Is there a precedent?
- Contact your sport Member Protection Information Officer to talk about your options.
- Talk to team members and other parents. Is there support for your child joining the team?
- Arrange to meet with the coach to discuss the issue.
- Consider lodging a complaint at the club, with your state sporting organisation or with your state/territory anti-discrimination agency if you can’t resolve the issue and feel that your child is being excluded unfairly.
