Administrators - What to do now

As an administrator you are vital in creating a culture and environment that welcomes, supports and values the full involvement of all its members, regardless of sexual orientation.

If someone in your club complains of sexuality discrimination, harassment or homophobia:

  • be mindful of your own attitudes and beliefs about sexuality, and homosexuality in particular.
  • avoid making judgements based on stereotypes, rumour, gossip or innuendo. A person’s sexuality is irrelevant to their involvement in the club.
  • listen to the person’s complaint and treat the situation with sensitivity:
    • Be aware that they may have found approaching you difficult and that they may find the situation embarrassing or upsetting.
    • Concentrate on the nature of the complaint (e.g., what happened? when?).  Don’t ask  personal and irrelevant questions about the person’s private life.
    • Don’t disclose personal  information to others about the player’s sexuality without their consent.
  • find out if there is any substance to the complaint but understand that homophobia can be very subtle and difficult to prove. You may need to get advice and support from your state sporting organisation if an investigation is required.
  • be prepared to take action  otherwise you’re condoning the behaviour, behaviour that is likely to get worse. For example organise a meeting with club officials to address inappropriate behaviours and/or sexuality issues, with the player’s consent. Bring in an expert facilitator if necessary.
