Coaches - What to do next
- Provide strong leadership to your team. Exhibit fair and respectful behaviour in all situations.
- Know the facts about homosexuality and issues such as HIV transmission. Stop speculation and misinformation within your club.
- Monitor the situation for subtle forms of homophobic harassment or discrimination, (e.g., a player being excluded from team activities, conversations or plays).
- Challenge homophobic language (e.g., ‘faggot’, ‘sissy’, ‘lezzo’ or ‘that’s gay’). Let players and others know that homophobia and discrimination are unacceptable.
- Ensure all players feel safe, welcome and equally involved in team and club activities.
- Initiate team anti-harassment or anti-discrimination awareness or training activities. Encourage other teams and the club to do the same. Address issues or incidents at team meetings.
- Select players on merit. Focus on the skills and attributes required for team to be successful.
- Act promptly and without bias on any concerns or complaints about sexuality discrimination, harassment or homophobia.
