Players - What to do now

As a player, you are responsible for following your club’s Code of Behaviour and treating those around you in a fair and respectful manner. You also have the right to fully participate in team and club activities free from discrimination and harassment.

If you are harassed because of your sexuality:

  • understand that doing nothing means that the situation will probably continue and may get worse. Try not to be intimidated by comments that ‘you’re gay!’ – this type of remark is often used to try and scare people into staying silent
  • talk to a supportive person, such as a friend, family member or trusted club/team
member, coach or official. Ask for their perspective on the situation and suggestions for dealing with it
  • consider talking to the person concerned (but only if you feel confident in doing so) and asking them to stop the behaviour that is upsetting you
  • discuss  the matter with a Member Protection Officer (MPO), if the behaviour continues They can assist you by listening, providing information and clarifying the options available to you. Options generally include asking for someone in authority in your club (e.g., the club President) to talk to the person being complained about, writing a formal complaint to your club or lodging a complaint with your anti-discrimination agency
  • contact the Australian Human Rights Commission or your state or territory anti-discrimination agency for factual informationyour anti-discrimination agency for information and advice.
