Administrators - What to do now
As an administrator you are responsible for creating a safe, non-discriminatory environment where all members are treated fairly. To do this you need to ensure appropriate policies and procedures are developed and implemented.
If a member complains that players could catch AIDS from a gay player on the team advise them that:
- such comments reinforce inaccurate stereotypes
- the club does not, and will not, discriminate against or harass a player because he or she is gay
- every person connected with the club is responsible for following safe practices at all times (e.g., on the field, in the dressing rooms, at training and in the use of personal equipment).
Contact your state or national sports organisation and ask for a copy of their guidelines (if they have them) or seek advice from Sports Medicine Australia.
