Coaches - What to do now
As a coach you need to create an environment free from sex based discrimination and harassment and to model and support gender inclusion in all that you do. You should also not be discriminated against because of your gender.
If you are concerned that you have missed out on a coaching or officials position because of your gender:
- Reflect on the selection process:
- Did it adhere to the club’s policy and guidelines?
- Do you have the required skills and experience to do the job?
- Why do you believe gender played a part in the decision?
- Talk to the person responsible for the decision:
- Ask them to explain the grounds on which the decision was made.
- Ask for feedback about your application.
- Consider discussing your concerns with your sport’s Member Protection Information Officer or a trusted authority.
- Write to your Management Committee if you believe you’ve been denied the position on the basis of gender.
- Explain why you are dissatisfied with the decision and formally ask in writing that they supply their reasons for the decision. Make clear the outcome you are wanting, for example the committee either:
- reopen the applications with appropriate selection criteria and processes
- share the role
- consider you for a similar position
- support your undertaking training to further your knowledge and skills.
- Consider seeking advice from the Australian Human Rights Commission or your state anti-discrimination agency if you are not satisfied with outcome of the complaint process and still believe discrimination has occurred. You can do this at any time during the club or sports complaint process.
- Direct your concerns to the relevant organisation if the appointment relates to a position that is the responsibility of a state or national sporting association.
