McKinnon Basketball

What we did

48 hours after the initial cancellation of community sport on the 13th of March 2020, the McKinnon Basketball Association (MBA) launched the MBA Online Training Challenge (OTC). The OTC is an online basketball training program which provided participants with videos of specific skill challenges each week with a target score for them to reach.

The OTC was comprised of 4 difficulty levels which were made easily accessible through the MBA website and promoted through all MBA communication channels including Instagram, Facebook, and EDM.

Each week, 3-4 new challenge videos per level were released to the community for participants to practice it, attempt it, record it and post it onto their social media channels.

Overall, the OTC published 84 different skills and drills videos across 8 weeks for the community to access.

Although there are other online training videos for people to watch and use, it was the gamification and levelling system of the OTC which created a competitive environment and drove community engagement.

The MBA also partnered with Strength and Conditioning experts, Core Advantage, to create a ‘Fitness’ section on the OTC for our members who were looking to stay fit during this time.

The quality and turnaround speed of the OTC garnered the attention of other basketball associations and governing bodies from all across Australia, as well as being featured in the Herald Sun.

The beauty of the OTC is that it was all created in-house using the tools readily available to almost anyone. The content, marketing material, and website of the OTC was designed, developed, and produced by the MBA staff using an Iphone camera and various platforms including Youtube, Squarespace, and social media. The videos were filmed at an outdoor court within our community, and the athletes who were demonstrating the drills were players from our Senior Big V McKinnon Cougars teams.

Why we did it

The Online Training Challenge was developed as a way to keep our community engaged and active in a safe and inclusive way during the uncertainty of the COVID-19 crisis. The McKinnon Basketball Association understood the various impacts the cancellation of organised sport was going to have on the community, both physically and mentally, and wanted to provide a free and accessible initiative to combat these issues that our community could participate anywhere at anytime.

The variety of drills the OTC offers are not only inclusive to a range of age groups and skill levels but also takes into consideration the training environment of the participant and their access to space and equipment.

This was underpinned by a recent organisational focus on being leaders within an industry which has historically been reactive rather than proactive when it came to embracing new technologies and ideas. It was our “anything is possibly” mentality that enabled us to think outside the box and leverage the various free platforms available and connect them to create a relatively seamless experience for our community.

What were the results

When Launching the OTC, our main goal was to see approximately a 10% uptake (300+ video views) from our community, but after it was shared through social media to other communities, the OTC had views in the thousands within a few days after it launched.

The majority of the evaluation of the OTC was done through analytic tools on the various platforms the initiative was hosted on. This provided us with key metrics that proved the OTC was and still is being used by the broader community.

The MBA also received numerous emails, feedback over social media, and praise from Basketball Victoria over the effectiveness and quality of the OTC.

  • 11,042 video views on Youtube
  • OTC Launch Video reached 22,428 people and was shared 121 times on Facebook
  • More than 12,000 visitors to the OTC webpage
  • Featured in the Herald Sun

Since the launch of the OTC the McKinnon Basketball Association have rolled out an online 30 Day Challenge to focus on the mental wellbeing of the community. The 30 Day Challenge incorporates the OTC, strength & conditioning and encourages healthy eating, mindfulness through meditation, and a connection to family and friends. The 30 Day Challenge targets a diverse range of age groups and genders across our community and provides a variety of challenges focussed on healthy habits and routine during Melbourne's stage 4 lockdown.
