Travel and medications for young athletes: Making the admin easier

Safe and well-planned travel is an essential part of safeguarding children and young people, so having solid guidelines in place is the first step towards a fun and low-stress event.

One of the more fun and exciting times for junior athletes is when they get to travel for a competition. For people responsible for young athletes during travel, you’ll know that giving medications to those athletes isn’t as straightforward as it seems. Giving the wrong medication to an athlete can have consequences to the athlete’s health and safety, as well as integrity implications for that athlete and the responsible support person.

To make it a clear process you can feel confident about, Sport Integrity Australia has developed the Administration of Medications guidelines to assist sports in supporting children and young people who require medication while travelling with their sport.

These guidelines prioritise participant wellbeing and safety and are tailored for club and state-level sports where access to medical support personnel may be limited. The guidelines provide clear, practical resources for staff and make it easier for parents and carers to provide the right information, saving everyone time and stress.

You can find the resources and guides for administering medications on the Sport Integrity Australia Website.
