National Manager - Play by the Rules

Hi 👋🏻

I’m Tom Dixon, the National Manager of Play by the Rules.

Since joining in December 2023, I’ve been working to refresh our brand and website. It’s exciting to say that we’re now live with our new logo, website and visual identity!

The purpose of this article is to share how we will continue supporting you to make sport inclusive, safe and fair.

Firstly, a question. If your club needed a new president, would you go searching at the local dog park?

In 2020, I was recruited from the local dog park to the club I volunteered at for four years. I actually joined as the president (a bold move) before moving into a general committee role to support the club’s strategy and planning.

I’m telling you this because I understand the challenges of volunteers – the late nights, the constant effort just to get teams on the park, the personality clashes and the difficulty of navigating advice and resources from sport bodies and other organisations.

I also know the feelings of pride, joy and satisfaction in knowing I supported people to connect and grow through a sport club.

And that’s why I love my role at Play by the Rules, which exists to empower communities to create positive change in all sports. Our tools, expertise, and support help ensure safe, fair, and inclusive environments. We help volunteers and administrators simplify complex issues, promoting ethical behaviour on and off the field (or court, pool, track, beach…).

Play by the Rules is an independent platform focused solely on community sport. We provide practical, peer-informed tools to help people navigate real-life situations with clarity and confidence.

I invite you to explore some of the new tips and resources now available on the website! Simply scroll down the home page or explore the menu bar for advice, templates and resources.

Now that we’ve re-launched, we’ll be working with volunteers, sports, governments and experts to build a sporting community defined by empathy, fairness, and belonging. Communities where everyone can participate, feel safe and be respected, no matter who they are.

Please explore our new website and reach out to me via playbytherules@sportintegrity.gov.au if you have any questions.
