Whether you’re cheering for your child, a friend, or your club, your behaviour on the sidelines can have a big impact on players, coaches, officials, and fellow supporters. The Spectator Code of Conduct sets clear expectations about how spectators can promote the safety and wellbeing of sport participants, uphold the integrity of sport and role model appropriate behaviour.
To provide clarity, the code includes specific examples of positive spectator behaviour, as well as actions that go against club values. These examples help ensure that everyone understands what is expected and how they can contribute to a safe and welcoming sporting environment. While the code provides a strong foundation, clubs are encouraged to tailor it to fit their specific needs.
Binding spectators to the code of conduct
There are various ways you can ensure spectators are aware of their responsibilities:
- Include the code of conduct in venue entry terms and conditions
- Promote the code of conduct on posters around your facilities
- Use social media and ground announcements to promote the examples of positive behaviours
- Promote the ways in which the club, association or venue managers will enforce the code of conduct.
You should also ensure that your committee passes a resolution to adopt the codes of conduct so that, if it is ever required, you have the option to take disciplinary action under your constitution on the basis of a breach of club or association endorsed code of conduct.
