Beyond managing logistics and governance, committee members set the tone for a safe, inclusive, and positive sporting environment. The Committee Member Code of Conduct helps define clear expectations for ethical leadership and governance, inclusion and community representation, safety and wellbeing, understanding the committee role and influence, and upholding the integrity of sport and the club.
To provide clarity, the code includes specific examples of behaviours that align with these values, as well as actions that go against them. While the code offers a strong foundation, clubs are encouraged to tailor it to fit their specific needs and community.
Some of the code of conduct elements for the committee require further actions to be taken within your club such as ensuring that there are appropriate member protection policies and volunteers in place.
The committee’s role also likely extends into creating, promoting and enacting disciplinary procedures. Your club must have a clear process for managing breaches of the code of conduct. These procedures may be outlined in your Member Protection Policy (MPP), club constitution, or by-laws. Disciplinary actions can range from a verbal or written warning to more serious consequences such as suspension or expulsion. Each code of conduct template has a standard procedure to follow if there is a breach of a code of conduct, but these should be adapted and linked to the wording and specific policies within your club.
You should also ensure that your committee passes a resolution to adopt the codes of conduct so that, if it is ever required, you have the option to take disciplinary action under your constitution on the basis of a breach of club or association endorsed code of conduct.
Please note: If your sport had adopted the National Integrity Framework or if your state or national sport organisation has Safeguarding Children & Young People and Member Protection Policies that your club or association has adopted, ensure your coaches are aware of their responsibilities and reporting obligations under those policies. The information in the template is not intended as a substitute for legal or other professional advice and you can edit the template to further align with your club or association's values and existing policies.
