Discussions around DEI have increased in recent years, and many of these discussions and debates have played out within sporting environments. Unfortunately, research has found that incidents of discrimination are still common within community sport.
A DEI policy is a helpful tool for clubs to be able to prevent, respond to and manage incidents around discrimination. It also helps to communicate the club’s commitment to DEI in providing a safe, respectful, and inclusive club environment for all members.
This DEI policy template is to be used by clubs and volunteers, to help shape and draft a policy to suit individual clubs or associations. The template provides a basic outline and framework of all the relevant parts of a DEI policy, within Australia.
This includes the relevant areas of legal frameworks and protections, for example related to the legal requirements of clubs in ensuring a duty of care towards players and members. It also provides direction and tips for clubs in shaping the policy to their specific needs, and their club culture and values. Having a policy to refer to and use when issues may arise, is the best way to help address the issue, reinforce the club’s commitment to DEI, and take appropriate action if needed.
